Common Body Functions and Movements That Have an Energetic Spiritual Meaning

When exploring and working with your own energy field, energy clearing, and your own vibrational frequency changes, you come to notice there are a few body movements or functions that seem to happen frequently. You may even notice synchronicities that occur with each one. Everyone is different and may experience more than one of these forms of energy releases from the body. I became curious about this when I started to meditate many years ago and my vibrations moved energetically and I began to notice synchronistic events with some of these common bodily functions and movements. I realized that some common body functions and movements have an energetic spiritual meaning.

These are some of the most common things I have noticed with myself, working with clients, and channeling higher levels of consciousness.

  1. Yawning. I first started to notice yawning during meditations. Sure, I was aware I could have been literally tired during my meditation and needed to nap. And lots of times this was truly the case. But this yawning was different. I was deeply aware in my meditations and I could feel and notice energy moving through my body and then I would yawn. It feels much different than a sleepy yawn. Yawning is actually a release of energy that relaxes. I started to notice any time I did energy work I would yawn. I noticed it during Reiki sessions, tapping or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), and channeling Light Language. I believe it is a powerful release to make room for Divine energy shifting. So, don't be hard on yourself if you start yawning during energy work. You are just releasing and making room for more.

  2. Cracking joints. As a young, open, and empathic child I started cracking my joints early on. It made me feel better and more confident in a way. Cracking joints may seem like a habit but it is actually a release of stored or pent up energy that has accumulated in the joints. This can become quite annoying to some but don't let that keep you from doing what your body is trying to let go of. Pay close attention to your emotional state when you feel like cracking your joints.

  3. Watery Eyes or Crying. We all know that when we cry we feel an enormous release and relaxation. Letting go and allowing the tears to flow freely feels refreshing. Like a gentle, soothing summer rain. Nurturing the plants and flowers and washing away the dryness and dust. I notice when I have a lot going on and I let myself cry I can move on with a different perspective. It feels like surrendering to something higher than myself. When I blend with spirit during mediumship readings the love is so powerful my eyes will water and at the same time it puts a big smile on my face and uplifts me higher. Let your energy be free to do what it naturally wants to do. There is nothing to be ashamed of or embarresed about. This energy movement is natural.

  4. Sneezing. I have always had some seasonal allergies and such. It has been a longtime custom to say "bless you" after someone sneezes. As I opened up more spiritually I noticed I was sneezing more often than usual. I asked spirit about what sneezing was trying to tell me. I then noticed my thoughts were really not in alignment with divinity. I now know that sneezing was interrupting my rambling thoughts. Reminding me to return to the present moment and to pay more attention to what thought forms were there. Sort of like when you are in a hurry and stub your toe. When you feel a sneeze coming on you have to stop what you are doing, pay attention, and release. Listen to your intuition and notice when you sneeze. Are you "allergic" to dust or an animal? Or is it your thoughts and emotional state about what is happening in your life. Sneezing can release stuck or stagnate energy in the throat chakra. Notice when you start sneezing if there is something on your mind or something you have to say.

  5. Belching or Burping. Noticing a lot of channelers belching and burping peaked my curiosity. At first, I thought this is kind of gross. But as I learned this is powerful energy release to clear the solar plexus, which is in the stomach area above the belly button. The center of our power and creativity. When a person channels and is speaking there is lots of energy coming through their vessel. This energy flow needs a release. I also feel if you channel for long periods of time you are speaking and breathing very fast. I notice I cannot get the words out fast enough at times. This build up needs to release. Belching or burping can release energy and helps you to "digest" and process what is going on in your life.

  1. Stretching. Stretching is natural to humans and animals. We see the animal kingdom stretching their bodies all the time. If any of you have cats and dogs around you know this first hand. When I notice energy accumulating in one area I feel the need to stretch that area of my body out. If you have ever started an exercise routine you know to stretch before and after. The natural release from the tight muscles and stress allows energy stored in the muscles to flow through you and be released. Notice the next time you feel tension in your neck, back, or anywhere you notice a concentration of energy. Allow yourself time to stretch those areas. The looser and freer your soul feels the more flexible and relaxed your body becomes.

  1. Dancing and Shaking. Dancing is known world wide for letting go, releasing, and going with the flow to your own tune. Dancing has an ancient history in ceremonies of all kinds. Allowing people to come together, be free, and move their whole bodies in a manner that feels good. And you don't have to be in a group of people to dance. You can dance anywhere at anytime. I must confess I dance while I am cooking or straightening up my house. This is a whole body release of energy. As children, we used to twirl around in a circle with our arms out until we got dizzy and fell on the ground. This releases energy and allows your soul to feel free.

After I became a Reiki Master I noticed at times when I felt stressed I would shake out my arms and wrists without thinking. When I work on clients I often flick energy into the light off my hands and wrists. I then realized I was releasing tension and stored energy that needed to move on. Kenyoku brushing or "dry bathing" is a Japanese technique taught in Reiki to sweep your energy clean. Sweeping and brushing your arms and across the body releases stagnate energy and purifies your energy field.

Shaking is a form of somatic release which is a holistic approach to releasing stored tension and trauma in the body. It can help regulate the nervous system and calm the body when it's overstimulated. You will see animals in the wild do this to recover from a traumatic experience or "fight or flight" reponse. It is completely natural. There is lots to learn from nature.
